Our Business Administration Apprenticeships prepare apprentices for working life, equipping them with the qualifications, skills and experience necessary for work in a business environment, and guaranteeing a future career path wherever they choose to progress.
At Aptus, we place a very high value on our workforce and so it is important to employ the right people from the outset. To do this we build close partnerships with reputable learning and training providers, and we trust them to provide the best people for our business.
Beth came to us through Alliance Learning. She joined the team after a significant career change when she moved from hairdressing to a role in the multi-utilities industry.
Beth started her apprenticeship in November 2014, working towards a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business Administration. To help Beth achieve the necessary business skills and qualifications we placed her within a small team where she supported operations programming and gained experience in administration. Within this role, Beth received one-to-one support from a mentor, as well as guidance from the management team to help her adapt to the business environment. She also benefited from the valuable experience of our graduate apprentices, to help her reach the high standards expected at Aptus.
The apprenticeship through Alliance Learning is a programme of comprehensive assessment and learning. To qualify for the Diploma, apprentices undertake an eight-week course to ensure GCSE qualifications in Maths, English and ICT are up to date and receive workplace knowledge training in Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). Apprentices also cover Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR), covering vital legislation such as health and safety, data protection, discrimination, responsibilities and rights at work and other key policies and procedures.
Following the completion of her diploma Beth chose to develop her talents within the Health, Safety, Quality and Environment team, as well as continuing to support the operations programming department. Beth says HSQE is at the heart of the business and is a challenging and interesting area in which she would like to develop her knowledge.
She commented that the speed of change from her previous career to beginning a future with Aptus was fast. “In less than two months my life had completely changed and I was starting a whole new vocation with a great company. I hadn’t realised there are administration jobs like this, the role is varied and every day I face new challenges. I’m learning a whole new set of skills.”
For us, there are immense benefits to be gained from providing on-the-job training for young people joining our company. It gives them a direct insight into the daily running of the business, which is never the same from one day to the next, and enables trainees to seamlessly evolve with the business. Investing in staff at the outset of their career also creates loyal and motivated employees who can grow with the company and actively help to shape it.
Working in the utility industry was a significant departure for Beth and like many young people she was unaware of the types and variety of careers on offer within the industry. After speaking with Aptus and learning about the opportunities available Beth was keen to join the company. She says: “I saw Aptus listed, looked at the website and had a chat with them about the position. It sounded completely different from conventional office jobs that I knew of and I wanted the challenge.”
There is wide scope for career progression at Aptus in areas such as project management, estimation and programming and electrical, water, gas and street lighting design – as well as through our tailored Craft Apprenticeships. The company has a firm commitment to offer guidance and support to employees who wish to progress that will enable them to reach their full potential.
