    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a new appointment and a variation

A new appointment is made when there is a new water or sewage company that wants to provide services in a specific area.
A variation is when an existing NAV company wants to make changes to the way they provide services, for example, if they want to change their prices or the areas they cover.

Eligibility criteria for a new appointment or variation

To be eligible for a new appointment, the qualifying site must meet at least one of the following Ofwat criteria.

    1. Unserved criterion

There are no other NAV companies currently providing water or sewage services to the area in question.

    2. Consent criterion

The NAV company has the consent of all NAV companies that currently provide water or sewage services to the area in question, and any existing companies agree to a site or premise transfer.

    3. Large user criterion

The developer or customer(s) of the site wishes to appoint a new supplier to serve their area/premises and is a large user of water or sewage services, i.e. an annual minimum of 50 megalitres of water for areas in England, and 250 megalitres for areas in England and Wales.

How long does a new appointment take?

The time it takes to appoint a new NAV company can vary depending on the type and complexity of the application.

Ofwat says that, on average, it takes them around 85 days to process a new appointment application including a 28-day consultation period.

    This includes a 5-stage application process split into;

    • pre-application stage
    • initial checks
    • assessment and recommendations
    • public consultation
    • final decision

How long does it take to get a new water connection or meter?

The amount of time it takes to get a new water connection or meter depends on the location and size of your project. It can take up to six months from application to the final setup for a water connection to be installed in some areas. Elsewhere, the process can take as little as two weeks.

We will always aim to keep installation times to a minimum and provide you with approximate timescales as part of your quote.

How much does a new water connection cost?

Connection charges vary depending on the size and type of connection you require. The cost of a new water connection may include connection, infrastructure and sustainable infrastructure charges such as:

    • Admin fees
    • Connection fees
    • Building water
    • Re-inspection fees
    • Additional traffic management fees
    • Wastewater connection fees
    • Sustainable drainage fees

We will provide you with a quote for the work and any applicable connection charges upon request.
