Gas Network Design Engineer

Aptus Utilities is seeking a Gas Network Design Engineer to join our company. The role can be based at the Head Office or any of our regional offices in the North East, Midlands or Yorkshire.

Job Title: Gas Network Design Engineer                                                                                              Reports to: Design Manager

Job Summary

Gas Network Design Engineer required to work within the design team, working directly under the guidance of and reporting to the Design Manager. The ideal candidate will have strong gas design awareness and be able to demonstrate previous experience within the utility industry.

Main Activities & Duties

  1. Undertaking outline designs for tendering purposes
  2. Detailed design submissions for LP, MP and IP distribution networks for domestic, commercial and industrial developments
  3. Liaise with Gas Transporters regarding outstanding design approvals
  4. Assist in submission of Completion Packs to adopting Gas Transporters
  5. Assist in correcting rejections of Completion Packs from adopting Gas Transporters and returning for approval
  6. Contact clients for resolution of design queries
  7. Updating appropriate records for scheme progress
  8. Provide technical support for business departments
  9. Review external design elements
  10. Offer full design support to the tendering team, construction team and clients
  11. Assist with mentoring, coaching and guiding trainee engineers

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Suitable engineering qualification (Degree/HND or equivalent)
  • City & Guilds 5831 (NVQ Level 4) Gas Network Design Qualification or minimum 3 years’ experience
  • Experience in designing/ planning LP, MP and IP gas utility infrastructure including governors
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, industry standards and procedures relating to gas network design
  • Knowledge of technical specifications of equipment including gas meters, governors, pipe and fittings
  • Knowledge of GT/ IGT network construction including knowledge of IGEM documents and GT/IGT standards
  • Understanding of the current GIRS requirements
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations and N.R.S.W.A
  • Understanding of ISO09001, ISO14001 & ISO018001
  • IT Literate
  • Gasworks and SNAP literate
  • A team player with the ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Client focused bringing new ideas, commitment and enthusiasm
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload


  • Experience of multi utilities
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • AutoCAD
  • IGEM membership

Working Conditions

This is a full time position working within a normal office environment.
