Gas Engineer

Overall purpose of the Role: 

This remote role covers our strategic regions across Great Britain (Northwest, Midlands, Yorkshire, Cumbria, and the Northeast). It involves significant regional travel, occasional overnight stays, and visits to Head Office as needed. The position focuses on maintaining strong relationships with Developers, IGTs, and GDNs, ensuring the highest safety, performance, and quality standards in the design, construction, and operation of utility networks.

What you will be doing:

  • Prepare and authorise FM144s, Routine and Non-Routine Operations in line with SCO requirements.
  • Hold (or work towards) Competent Person and Authorising Engineer status for both GDNs and iGTs.
  • Manage specialist fittings orders, stock levels, and issue relevant work permits.
  • Conduct audits on operations, gas tools, meters, and manifold/meter room installations.
  • Oversee gas connections, testing, commissioning, and related documentation.
  • Lead pre- and post-completion meetings with site managers and network representatives.
  • Mentor and train new staff, identifying competency gaps and development needs.
  • Promote a strong safety culture, reporting and investigating incidents as required.
  • Ensure all works comply with gas industry standards, company policies, and health & safety requirements.
  • Support asset management compliance, audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.
  • Provide operational guidance to ensure assets are constructed safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
  • Perform technical and safety audits pre- and post-construction.
  • Assist with SCO compliance, CP and AE duties, and participate in standby rotas.
  • Represent Aptus Utilities in industry forums and manage customer complaints to resolution.
  • Undertake other duties as required

What we ask from you:

  • Demonstrate several years’ experience in the Gas distribution business.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in Gas distribution networks including- design, construction, operation and maintenance
  • Key underpinning knowledge of the relevant industry standards, regulations, specifications and legislative requirements.
  • SCO,  Core,  Forms of Authority,  Permit to Work,  Routine Operations and Non Routine Operations is essential and must be willing to do Non Routine Operations if not already possessing this.
  • EUSR NCO (G) Distribution main layer minimum 180mm and preferably 355mm.
  • Experience on making connections on to metallic mains – UPT / Bagging Off.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • An innovative approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent relationship management skills.
  • Skilled in establishing and managing relationships with our customers and stakeholders, and able to influence customer behaviours and outcomes.
  • Knowledge of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA).
  • Clarity, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Full UK Driving Licence
