What are the different size connections for EV charging points?
The size of the connection will depend on the charger’s power output. The three main connection types are:
- The 3-pin domestic socket (up to 3kW) offers a low voltage (LV) connection with a slow charger primarily used in domestic homes or smaller commercial premises.
- The 7/13-pin industrial socket (up to 22kW) offers a high voltage (HV) connection with fast chargers frequently used in small and medium-sized business premises.
- The Type 2 connector (43kW to 150kW) offers an extra-high voltage (EHV) connection with rapid chargers, which is often fitted at large car parks and business premises.
What different types of EV chargers exist?
There are three main types of EV chargers:
- Slow chargers (up to 3kW) are typically used for home charging and can charge an EV in 8-10 hours, i.e. overnight.
