Overall Purpose of the Role:
Aptus Utilities are looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with HV/LV utility network design experience to join our growing Design team. Whether your current title is Electrical Network Design Engineer, HV/LV Design Engineer or Utility Design Engineer, we’d love to hear from you.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of residential and commercial utility infrastructure projects, designing HV/LV electrical networks from initial concept through to final approval. Working alongside experienced multi-utility professionals, you’ll play a key role in delivering safe, innovative and compliant network designs while helping to develop the next generation of engineers.

What you will be doing:
- Designing bespoke HV/LV electrical distribution networks and earthing systems for residential developments, with occasional industrial and commercial projects.
- Producing technically compliant network and substation designs in accordance with DNO/IDNO requirements, ENA standards, CDM Regulations, Codes of Practice, current legislation and company procedures.
- Obtaining design approvals from the relevant DNOs and IDNOs.
- Providing specialist technical advice on electrical networks and substations to internal teams, clients and project stakeholders.
- Supporting the successful handover of projects to the Operations team and providing technical guidance through to final network connection.
- Managing your own workload to deliver high-quality designs accurately, on time and within budget.
- Undertaking technical peer reviews of electrical designs prior to submission.
- Liaising with DNOs, IDNOs, utility providers, manufacturers and other external stakeholders.
- Supporting the Tendering team by producing outline designs where required.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with both new and existing clients.
- Working closely with our Gas and Water Design teams to deliver coordinated multi-utility solutions.
- Mentoring and supporting trainee engineers, sharing technical knowledge and best practice.
What we ask from you:
- A relevant engineering qualification (Degree, HNC or equivalent).
- Experience designing LV and HV electrical utility networks and substations.
- A good understanding of residential utility infrastructure and DNO/IDNO design requirements.
- Knowledge of current NERS accreditation requirements and associated compliance standards.
- A strong understanding of electrical equipment, substations, cables and network plant.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- A customer-focused approach with a commitment to delivering high-quality solutions.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary design team.
