This week we are celebrating our 11th birthday and marking the occasion at our offices and depots with celebratory balloons and cakes as a thank you to our employees.
Aptus Utilities has come a long way since our first contract with Rowland Homes in 2011. We have grown from being a multi utility provider serving customers in the North West, to delivering services to hundreds of clients across the North, Midlands and Yorkshire.
During a relatively short period, we have transformed the multi utility sector with our competitive streamlined package of services. In 2011 the addition of street lighting allowed us to offer an advanced multi utility package with the potential to deliver added savings and efficiencies for clients.
We have since added electric vehicle charging capability, which, along with our fibre services, allows Aptus to offer a unique multi utility package to clients across the full spectrum of the construction industry.
The opening of our depots at Follingsby in Gateshead (2016), Burntwood in Staffordshire (2018), and Normanton in Yorkshire (2020) have been pivotal in our expansion and have significantly enhanced our operational capability across the UK.
Our workforce is essential to our success and investing in our employees’ skills and expertise to help them maximise their potential is a priority. This in turns supports business growth by promoting a confident, knowledgeable, and skilled workforce that our customers can rely on.
Our successful business administration and multi utility apprenticeship programmes ensure we are creating a sustainable business for the future. We’ve won awards for our commitment to building our workforce and, as we prepare to launch our fourth Craft Apprenticeship recruitment drive this summer, we are excited and proud of the role we are playing in nurturing a new generation into the industry.
Rankings by London Stock Exchange Group, in their ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ report, and by the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100, are among our most notable accolades.
As Aptus continued to grow rapidly, in 2018 we moved to a new head office which ensured we could continue to serve our growing portfolio of clients and comfortably accommodate the workforce required to deliver our services on an increasingly ambitious scale.
In 2019 Aptus Utilities further strengthened its position by collaborating with WestBridge and with the appointment of Chairman Martin Donnachie. Their extensive experience in assisting companies to achieve their long-term business goals will be key in helping Aptus to realise its ambitions.
In 2020 the pandemic prompted Aptus to reinforce the businesses with the development of new strategies and processes. The company continued to secure new contracts and clients despite the challenges faced. Aptus was rewarded for its focused team effort by being shortlisted at the Housebuilder Awards in the Subcontractor category. On top of this, we achieved a third year in the LSEG ‘1000 Companies’ report.
Our people are the main reason that we are so successful therefore it is vital we do our utmost to take care of their mental health and wellbeing. The COVID-19 pandemic accentuated this need and in April 2020 we launched our Health and Wellbeing campaign; this underlined our commitment to raising awareness around mental health and ensured employees know where to go for support. All employees have access to private healthcare resources including an independent, confidential 24 hour helpline, as well as counselling should they need it. With 10 Mental Health First Aiders now trained across the business, we will continue to upskill staff on mental health awareness and strengthen our resources in this area.
We got off to a flying start securing record numbers of contracts and receiving the news that Managing Director Lisa Kerford had been shortlisted for a Lockdown Leader Award at the National Business Women’s Awards. We look forward to finding out how she gets on when the winners are announced in May.
In March we celebrated three team members who marked 10 years’ service with the company and who have been instrumental in the company’s success.
Roger Collier and Brian Cutler were instrumental in gaining the accreditations to start the business and in establishing its success early on.
Natasha Clarke joined the business in January 2011 and played a pivotal role in setting up processes and co-ordinating the delivery of projects. In her new role as People Director, she will be driving the new activities associated with people, communications and marketing.
As we head into a new financial year with well over 1700 contracts secured, we can look to the future with enthusiasm and confidence. Our company timeline shows more of the defining moments in the Aptus story, so far…
