Schools’ ‘Bright Sparks’ learn about road safety

November saw the return of our Road Safety campaign, launched to coincide with Road Safety Week (19-25 November), as we visited schools in Bolton and Wigan to spread the message about being seen and safe during dark winter days.

Our presentations at Our Lady’s RC Primary School in Aspull and at St Catherine’s CE Primary School in Horwich focused on teaching the children about general road safety awareness, as well as making sure they knew to be alert to the additional dangers that can be present around roadworks and building sites.

We talked to them about the ideas behind the Green Cross Code and how to apply the rules ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ to help them cross the road safely. The children were an attentive and receptive audience, readily engaging with staff members, and we were delighted to be invited into the schools to highlight this important message.

Supporting the School Road Safety Campaign since 2014

At the end of the session we distributed hundreds of specially made high-visibility jackets for the children, who ranged in age from 4-11 years. The tops bear the slogan ‘BRIGHT SPARKS GET SEEN IN THE DARK’ to remind the children to be smart when they are making decisions about crossing the road.

Aptus Utilities launched its School Road Safety Campaign in 2014 and since then we have donated more than 1500 high-visibility tops to schoolchildren. We are looking forward to continuing this initiative and visiting more schools in the areas where we operate, in 2019.
