Career Focus – Technical Manager Adrian Cunningham

This May, Aptus celebrated a significant milestone as Technical Manager Adrian Cunningham marked his tenth year with the company. Adrian has been pivotal in the success of the street lighting department, and in 2023 took on overall responsibility for managing the design team. Here, Adrian offers a glimpse into his journey with Aptus and shares his aspirations for the years ahead.

Q: Tell us about the journey you’ve gone on at Aptus?

I was initially brought in to help build and develop the street lighting arm of Aptus, designing and producing clear, accurate, and buildable drawings. Over time I began to help other departments with their processes, strategy, and training plans which naturally led to me becoming technical manager in 2022.

Following this I started managing the engineering connections teams and was given the freedom to help advance the business and review the processes for our systems and drawings. Last year the full design portfolio was added to my remit too, and we began a restructure with an eye on training the next generation of engineers.

Q: What have been the main highlights over the last decade?

Personally, it’s being rewarded by the business to be given the opportunity I have now and to have the freedom to develop it. Not many companies give you that!

Q: What advice would you give someone starting out in the industry?

Never stop learning. Find a mentor that will push you to your limits so you can be the best version of yourself.

Q: How is the drive towards a greener, more sustainable industry impacting your work?

Part L and the road to net zero is already having a great impact on our sector. With gas use diminishing, we need to be able to react quickly to legislative changes to support our clients.

I’ve always embraced change and enjoy learning and working with new technologies. From ‘smart’ lighting systems and EV charging, to solar and the impact of air and ground source heat pumps on the energy network, it’s fascinating to be involved with so much innovation.

Q: What are your aims and objectives for the next ten years?

The role is ever-evolving and with the continued backing of the business, my focus is on continuing to develop individually and helping Aptus remain the provider of choice in the industry.

Q: And finally, what do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy fell walking and loved being part of the three peaks team Aptus had last year. I’m a keen biker too, and also go to dance weekenders up and down the country. I’ve been dancing for around 13-14 years – it’s great for keeping fit!
